The Ostrich egg shell is the thickest and largest in the world.  The Ostrich hen applies an enamel coating on the egg before it is laid.  The coating on the egg gives it a high polished look and keeps harmful germs from getting inside.  We get all of our ostrich eggs from a local ostrich farm here in Arizona that has "homegrown" ostrich hens.  These beautiful eggs come to us as an incredible canvas for Crystal to sketch and carve on.  The back is then opened by  Crystal and cleaned out and prepared for Shannon to create a matching garden on the inside.  It is a definite team effort to create the entire egg, all 360 degrees of it.

Fun Ostrich Egg Facts:

  • An ostrich eggs weighs approximately three and a half pounds
  • a fertile Ostrich egg takes approximately six weeks to hatch.
  • An ostrich egg is equal to approximately twenty-four chicken eggs.
  • The ostrich is a descendant of the dinosaur, so technically these can be viewed as dinosaur eggs.
